How Blondie Channeled Donna Summer to Create its Defining Hit, “Heart of Glass”

How Blondie Channeled Donna Summer to Create its Defining Hit, “Heart of Glass”

September 4, 2018 // Bianca Xunise

Blondie is one of the quintessential New York punk bands, and Chicago’s favorite crate diggers at Numero Group just announced the release of the group’s archives to the public. Next fall, Numero will be releasing BLONDIE: The Complete Studio Recordings 1975-1982, which will probably be the definitive portrait of the band at its prime (judging by the title).

They’ll give a peek at the kind of gems they’re uncovering on October 26, when the label’s releasing a deluxe 12” EP (also available in digital form) called BLONDIE: Heart of Glass, collecting six distinct versions of their biggest song, following its evolution from demo sketch to smash hit.

We’re so excited about all of this, that we asked artist Bianca Xunise to make a comic about the winding path that “Heart of Glass” took from Chris Stein’s head – and bedroom – to pop history.

There’s a fat chance that Blondie doesn’t play this song at Riot Fest 2018. There’s only one way to find out in real-time: Buy tickets.
