Chicago-based art rock quartet Pool Holograph have clearly been hard at work reinventing themselves. They’re set to release their third album, Love Touched Time and Time Began to Sweat, on October 2—and the first single, “Medieval Heart,” is evidence of lot of methodical tinkering. “Medieval Heart” is a luscious, captivating lead single. It’s an exercise in minimalism that highlights exactly what Pool Holograph is trying to get at with their first full-length release since 2017’s Transparent World. Frontman Wyatt Grant’s vocal takes are crystal clear, flush with emotion and spirit. The instrumentation on Love Touched Time allows for guitar licks and plucky bass lines to breathe like never before, carving some of the group’s catchiest arrangements to date. There’s a glowing bump in production value overall—heard on last year’s “Stage Fright” and “Blank Suite” singles—that has undoubtedly brought the best qualities of the band to the forefront.
“‘Medieval Heart’ is an appeal to someone who acts carelessly or selfishly at the expense of someone else’s well being,” Grant says about the song. “The person being affected is growing used to the dynamic, but it’s beginning to close in on their heart/well-being. It’s about being aware of exploitation and power dynamics… how pursuing those things are a zero-sum game.”
