Throughout the history of popular music, queer and trans artists have been at the forefront of radical change. LGBTQ+ musicians have especially pushed the envelope within the circles of punk and DIY culture—usually against a heteronormative grain that often fails to properly credit queer artists for their trendsetting, genre-wide work across songwriting, music videos, fashion, and every other corner of pop culture.
In honor of Pride Month, we’ve put together a playlist covering the trailblazers of punk and DIY music: the earliest days of underground queercore, the groundbreaking wave of openly gay and transgender musicians in the 2010s, and the sweeping amount of diverse LBGTQ+ artists topping the charts today. This 2-hour playlist was put together by members of the Riot Fest staff who identify as LGBTQ+; Take these tracks with you throughout the year, and celebrate queer art every day.
