Interview with Deanna Belos
Q: What have you been up to with Sincere Engineer since your last Riot Fest appearance in 2022?
Deanna: We put out a record last September named Cheap Grills which was our biggest yet. We got to work with a new producer, and I think we’ll get to play quite a few songs from the record during our Riot Fest set, so all exciting things.
We’ve also been on tour with New Found Glory this year, and I’ve got a few acoustic songs which will be coming out in the next few months (one of which features Brendan Kelly from Lawrence Arms!)
Q: Speaking of, this will be Sincere Engineer’s third time playing Riot Fest – how are you feeling about your return?
Deanna: We’re super excited to be back, looking forward to a good set and hopefully a corndog circle pit bigger than the last.
Q: The Corndog Pit is such a fun part of Riot Fest history, we’ve always been curious about whether you knew about the plot beforehand? Have any other crowds successfully recreated the Corndog Pit?
Deanna: We had no clue, it was just a fan-lead Facebook thing! As soon as Corn Dog Sonnet no. 7 started everyone in the pit ran around waving corn dogs, it was pretty wild.
Other crowds will try to make it happen, but it’s only an official corn dog pit at Riot Fest – the carnival vibe really makes it, and there’s just no other venue where that many people can pull off bringing corn dogs into a mosh pit.
Q: What inspired you to revisit Corn Dog Sonnet No. 7 coming up on 7 years after its release? Has anything changed about your relationship with the song since its release as part of your debut album?
Deanna: We’ve played Corn Dog Sonnet No. 7 at almost every show, and it’s definitely a fan favorite. Our first train of thought was that we didn’t want to remix something we released recently, so we thought let’s bring back Corn Dog. It’s also one of our first songs released under the name Sincere Engineer, so it was cool to revisit – it feels like yesterday but we’ve also grown a lot since that first release. It just made perfect sense since we really wanted to create and release something fun for this collab with Chris and Hot Mulligan.
Q: Tell me more about how this collaboration with Hot Mulligan came to be?
Deanna: Our first big tour was with Hot Mulligan and Chris has always been such a sweetheart! He’s a super talented and unique producer, and I’m a big fan of his solo stuff (Extra Large Holiday Card). I thought it would be so fun to collaborate with him and have him remix the corn dog song in his style!
Q: That’s amazing! Is there any possibility we’ll see you two join forces on stage at the fest?
Deanna: If they’d have me, I’d definitely join them!
