Crank up the hot water heater and get ready to sit on your ass. A new study from Dr. Steve Faulkner of Loughborough University, shows that a hot hour-long bath burns around 140 calories, or about the same as a 30-minute walk.
In the study, one group of men sat in a hot bath for one hour, while the second group of men cycled for an hour. While the group who cycled burned more calories than the bathers, the group who sat in a bath for an hour had blood sugar after eating that was 10 percent lower than the group who exercised. Hot baths were also shown to reduce chronic inflammation.
Obviously, most of the calories you burn in a hot bath are from sweating, and while sweating does have health benefits, like detoxifying your body, boosting your endorphins, lowering your risk of kidney stones, reducing acne and more, sweating also dehydrates you.
So most of the weight you lose from sweating is water weight. Water that you’ll need to replenish.
If you want to be lazy, sit in a bathtub, and pretend that you’re being healthy, that’s awesome. Eating spaghetti and drinking alcohol in the bathtub is amazing and I would highly recommend it, but if you really want to get healthy, get your ass off the couch, out of the bathtub, and move your legs.
