When you own a record label with a roster chock-filled with artists that you love like brothers, there are definitely perks. Take Fat Mike… please! But seriously, folks, Fat Mike has set the bar for family-style label rosters over at Fat Wreck Chords, and he just loves the Mad Caddies (so do we, or we wouldn’t have booked them to play at the Bottom Lounge on June 1).
This mutual admiration society does more than just party together, though. NOFX’s mouthpiece put his record producer hat and hand-picked 12 classic punk songs for the Caddies to cover. The result is Punk Rocksteady, a new album coming out on June 15 via (you guessed it) Fat Wreck Chords.
Punk Rocksteady includes cover versions of classic tunes by such heavy-hitters as Bad Religion, the Misfits, Operation Ivy, Against Me!, Descendents, NOFX (duh), and Green Day’s international smash hit, “She”—which BrooklynVegan premiered today, and can be heard right here.
In a statement, Mad Caddies vocalist Chuck Robertson speaks of Fat Mike and the band’s long-time-coming “grand vision” of having a diverse array of sounds represented on the adventurous effort. “We needed to have traditional ska, super horn-heavy dancehall songs, reggae, SoCal stuff,” Robertson remarked, expressing the band’s desire to reimagine some of Fat Mike’s favorite songs in “new and weird” ways.
So head on over to Fat Wreck Chords’ virtual shopping mall to pre-order Punk Rocksteady; and join us in hearing these songs live-tested at the Bottom Lounge on June 1, as the Mad Caddies will be playing there that night. Tickets are on sale now.
