Johnny Marr is ramping up a new album, Call the Comet. The Smiths guitarist’s third solo LP is scheduled for release on June 15 via New Voodoo.
“I wouldn’t call it a concept record,” Marr explained to NME, “but it’s got a unifying theme going through it about the Earth welcoming a different intelligence from the cosmos to save us from our own plight. The title Call the Comet is sort of a conscious plea for a new way.”
Marr performed new album track, “Bug,” on Conan last night. You can watch his performance below, and you can see him perform live and in person at Riot Fest 2018.
“Call the Comet is my own magic realism,” Marr added. “It’s set in the not-too-distant future and is mostly concerned with the idea of an alternative society. The characters in the songs are searching for a new idealism, although there are some personal songs in there too. It’s something that people like me can relate to.”
