Riot Fest Community Spotlight: CHICAT

Riot Fest Community Spotlight: CHICAT

July 17, 2023 (February 23, 2024) // Nancy Polanco

Our Community Spotlights feature all the wonderful food, nightlife, and local businesses found within Douglass Park, home to Riot Fest. Join us throughout the year as the Riot Fest staff recommends their favorite spots in the neighborhood on a continuing basis—in hopes that you’ll make a stop in Douglass Park before, during, and well after the fest concludes.

CHICAT, Chicago Center for Arts & Technology, a non-profit organization based in Chicago, is positively impacting the neighboring communities of North Lawndale, Little Village, and Pilsen. The organization is committed to educating, empowering, and elevating the talents of individuals, transforming lives, and catalyzing equitable and inclusive spaces for individuals to learn, work, and grow.

The mission of CHICAT is to provide an enriching learning environment with access to emerging technologies, artist-led classes, and standards-based vocational training to support each person’s pathway. From 3D printers to photography rooms, the organization offers a range of resources and training programs to help individuals develop their skills and achieve their goals.

At CHICAT, the commitment is to reach and teach individuals who experience barriers to academic achievement and sustained employment. The organization believes that everyone deserves access to the resources necessary to provide a higher quality of life with socioeconomic stability, interpersonal and professional development, and gainful employment. CHICAT focuses on youth arts and adult education, partnering with neighboring schools and After School Matters to offer programs for young people, and providing free adult classes and support for job seekers.

One of their unique features is the emphasis on providing support beyond the classroom. For adults, they offer mock interviews and help with job applications and follow up with them after graduation to ensure they have the resources they need to succeed. This approach ensures that individuals not only receive valuable training and education but also the support necessary to apply their skills in real-world settings.

CHICAT wonderful resource for the community. They have a small gallery area where it can be rented out for art can be displayed. By offering a wide range of programs and support services, the organization is empowering individuals and building equitable spaces for all. Through their dedication and commitment, CHICAT is making a positive impact on the lives of many individuals and families in the Chicago area.
