Staff Picks: Spooky Stuff To Watch With Your Boo

Staff Picks: Spooky Stuff To Watch With Your Boo

The 2023 Staff Picks edition with shows + movies to watch this Halloween
October 23, 2023 (October 23, 2023) // Riot Fest

At the Riot HQ, we take pride in on our obscene amount of mostly useless pop culture knowledge, so we did our best to boil down our picks to just one spooky thing to watch this Halloween, which falls on a Tuesday this year. With kids coming home early, you’ll have time for at least 1-2 movies or shows that night from the list below.

So read, or watch the clips below if you need some help picking out what to watch this silly and spooky time of year.

Happy Halloween punks!

Tales From The Crypt
Casper
Alf
Smile
Shaun of the Dead

 Art Director

For the kids

E.T. (1982)

Technically, some of the events of this movie take place during Halloween. E.T. dresses up as a ghost for trick-or-treating. It counts! I rest my case.

Spooky

The Conjuring (2013)

Those jump scares. They’ll getcha!

Honorable mention

Tales from the Crypt (1989)

Tales from the Crypt – The Complete Series on DVD. I recommend the episodes “What’s Cookin” and “Abra Cadaver” to start.

Marc

 Talent Buyer

Children of the Corn (1984)

“He wants you too, Malachai.”

Alf – “Some Enchanted Evening” (1987)

I’ll let IMDB do the talking on this one as their description is perfection…

Halloween is approaching and ALF wants to go tick-or-treating. Kate, of course, objects, but ALF persists. He argues that he has a natural costume and he tries offering Wille an offer he can’t refuse.

IMDB

Luba

 Office Director

Casper (1995)

Casper bc I’m a scaredy-cat.

Caroline

 Executive Assistant

Halloweentown (1995)

Speaks for itself!

Jen

 Office Administrator

Practical Magic (1998)

A rom-com about witches?! So much to love here. Sandra Bullock & Nicole Kidman as love-cursed, witchy sisters raised by their magical aunts, bringing together the skeptical women in a small town to rid themselves of an evil, abusive jerk. And you can’t forget about Midnight Margaritas.

Tim

 Marketing Director

Shaun of the Dead (2004)

This “rom-zom-com” movie is part of the Three Flavours Cornetto Edgar Wright/Simon Pegg trilogy with Nick Frost, Bill Nighy, and even Martin Freeman. It isn’t too scary, and it hugs you like a nice warm cozy blanket. I watch it at least 3x per year.

Nancy

 Community Liason

Paranormal Activity (2007)

It makes sense to feel safe by having flour on the floor.

Monique

 Brand Manager

Ghost Adventures (series 2008 – present)

There isn’t a single episode that isn’t entertaining, in a multitude of different ways. Hope Zak Bagans sees this.

Hannah

 Talent Buyer

Smile (2022)

Smile because it makes me never want to smile again.

Jake

 Talent Buyer

Renfield (2023)

Nicholas Cage is a vampire!

Riot Twitter Person

As Above, So Below (2014)

My life as the Twitter person is a nightmare I don’t need to watch scary movies. As Above, So Below is good too.
