The BBC reports today that pro-Pussy Riot graffiti was found at a murder site in Kazan, Russia. The phrase “Free Pussy Riot” was found written on the wall “presumably” in blood above the murdered bodies of a mother and daughter, aged 76 and 38. The deputy head of the Kazan Investigative Committee Andrei Shepitsky says the killer most likely used the infamous case to confuse authorities and throw them off the trail. The apartment was tossed and robbed, which Shepitsky notes usually indicates drug/alcohol use or mental illness. Pussy Riot’s lawyer Nikolai Polozov denied any link to the band, positing that the use of their name could have been used to discredit them and their supporters. He issued the following statement via Twitter:
What happened in Kazan is horrible. Pussy Riot always stood for peaceful protest. This incident is either a huge provocation or the actions of a crazed man.”
Earlier this week two members of the band fled Russia fearing prosecution following the widely derided and heavily covered trial and conviction of three other members of the band. Pussy Riot’s new single “Putin Lights Up The Fires” can be streamed here.
