Lori Barbero, one of our favorite people ever and drummer in Babes in Toyland, has partnered with multi-media artist Chris Larson and musician Corey Avery to launch the MN All-Girls Music Studio.
A GoFundMe campaign is seeking to raise $20,000 for the MN All-Girls Music Studio which will “provide the space and equipment for girls to explore and experiment with music through play, collaboration, writing, and recording.”
We spoke with Lori Barbero about the project: “Everyone knows that music is the best relationship that happens in our lifetime. No matter if you are creating the songs or listening, it has changed my life in so many ways, with decisions I have made and paths that I have taken. So, I wanted to do something in this world that would be positive, and hopefully change lives through music. Empowering young females today, is very important for everyone’s future. We all benefit.”
Lori tells us that main focus of MN All-Girls Music Studio “is to facilitate a safe space for young underprivileged girls to create music, free of charge. Also, they will not be told that one away is right or one way is wrong. No matter what they do, it’s all good. In the end, we will be releasing two songs on a 7” record, for each band that the girls create.”
The studio is located in St. Paul and open to girls ages 6-15 once a week at no cost to them.
Lori will produce each single that comes out of the studio. The practice space has been donated by a local supporter of music and their goal is to raise $20,000 by February 14th which will cover costs for the first year. You can donate here.
