Who The Heck Are Gymshorts?

Who The Heck Are Gymshorts?

August 12, 2022 (December 7, 2022) // Bailey Davis

Today’s Who The Heck spotlight is hitting every good angle on Gymshorts, a four-piece punk powerhouse from Rhode Island that we’re unbelievably excited to host this Sunday at Cobra Lounge.

Words like “brutal” and “unrefined” have been thrown around to describe Gymshorts, but the band’s self-description (from a friend) might be the best way to put it: “A little bit Bart Simpson, a hint of Kevin McCallister, and a dash of Dennis the Menace.” They’ve been bringing their fuzzed-out punk songs to stages everywhere over the past few years, touring with the likes of La Luz and Death Valley Girls. The band’s latest (and possibly greatest) single “Date Kate Jones (You Can’t) came out last year, but you’d be remiss to skip their incredible debut LP Knock Knock, which has some of our favorite Gymshorts jams (like the irresistible “Ding Dong Ditch”).

Gymshorts will play Chicago’s Cobra Lounge this Sunday, August 14 with support from Pleasantries, Hi Ho, and Caitlin Edwards (tickets are available here). Get to know the band ahead of time with our latest Q&A below.

FOR FANS OF: THE AQUADOLLS, NERVOUS DATER, TEENAGE HALLOWEEN, THE PARANOYDS

Q&A

Bucket-list collaborator for a future Gymshorts song:

“It’d be so cool to write a song with The Donnas! Or Kat Bjelland (Katastrophy Wife)!”

Favorite live set of all time:

“I think my highlight would have to be getting to see Devo.”

Desert island album pick:

“It would probably have to be one of those meditative help-you-breathe calmly kind of albums cause I would be losing my damn mind stuck on an island for the rest of my life!!”

Must-have food for the tour van:

Candy !! I always have to have some sugar on reserve definitely. We like donuts a lot too so there’s usually a box of local donuts from wherever we are on tour in there too!
