According to a recent interview with Lee Ranaldo, Sonic Youth are planning a number of archival releases. As of right now a tour film from 1986 is in the final editing stages and a series of live recordings from 1985 should be released “in the next couple months.” The group is also compiling some recently unearthed demos to add on to a deluxe edition of 1987’s Sister LP and putting together a collection of previously unreleased music written as film scores. One possible item up for release could be a recording of a late 1980s London show where Sonic Youth was joined by Iggy Pop for a rendition of “Now I Wanna Be Your Dog.” The endgame, according to Lee, is to release live collections from every era of the band, revealing how the songs changed over months of touring.
On the future of the band in this post-Gordon/Moore separation, Ranaldo says they’re in a “longterm hold” though he doesn’t completely rule out new music or shows in the future.
