A bunch of teenagers (and adults) staring at their phones and wandering around parts of town late at night they aren’t familiar with. What could go wrong?
In O’Fallon, Missouri, people are getting robbed while playing the popular new game Pokémon GO. Police say the suspects attracted several victims to a specific location by setting up a beacon to a “Pokéstop” to lure more players. (we have no idea what a “pokestop is and honestly don’t care enough to find out).
On Sunday, the O’Fallon Police Department posted on their Facebook, “Many of you have asked how the app was used to rob victims, the way we believe it was used is you can add a beacon to a Pokéstop to lure more players. Apparently they were using the app to locate ppl standing around in the middle of a parking lot or whatever other location they were in,”
Basically, the suspects used the Pokémon GO game to find their victims by anticipating popular spots in the app.
It’s pretty cool you are getting off the couch and getting a bit of exercise, but be careful. “Pay attention to your surroundings; you never know what beautiful or interesting things you’ll see while playing the game,” the app warns. You don’t want to trip over a dead body…
