This Mac ‘N’ Cheese Is Goth As Fuck

This Mac ‘N’ Cheese Is Goth As Fuck

June 14, 2017 (December 6, 2022) // Riot Fest

Are you looking for some pasta to match your soul and outfit? Or are you just looking to ruin some perfectly good mac ‘n’ cheese?

Well Jen Phanomrat has a perfect recipe for you, Black Mac ‘n’ Cheese! And as you can probably tell by the name, it’s mac ‘n’ cheese that is black. It uses activated charcoal capsules. Fun fact, activated charcoal is often used to help treat a overdoses in the emergency room. Drugs and other toxins bind to the charcoal and help rid the body of unwanted substances. How goth is that?!

Check out the recipe from Jen below:

Ingredients:

  • For the pasta:
  • 3 tbsp food grade activated charcoal powder
  • 8 oz uncooked elbow macaroni
  • Salt for water
  • For the sauce:
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp food grade activated charcoal powder
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
  • Salt to taste

Instructions:

  • In a pot, boil 3 cups of lightly salted water. Add the charcoal powder and stir well. Add elbow pasta, stir, and cook until al dente. Drain the black water, coat the pasta with a drizzle of olive oil and set aside.
  • In a pot, melt butter and whisk in flour and charcoal powder. Cook until the mixture for about one minute. Then pour in cold milk while whisking, and cook for a few minutes until the sauce begins to thicken. Lower heat and add the cheese. Stir until fully melted. Season with salt. Combine the cooked pasta and sauce, and serve.

DISCLAIMER: Do not serve “Black Mac ‘n’ Cheese” to someone without telling them the ingredients. Charcoal can affect the absorption of medication in the GI system. That’s why it’s given to overdose patients in the Emergency Department– to prevent the drug from being absorbed and causing further harm. Charcoal doesn’t really have a taste but can have a gritty texture. It can also stain clothing.
