In “Pray Phone,” a Comic About Angels, Advice Comes at a PriceDive into a fresh comic by Alejandra Gutierrez
Alejandra Gutierrez has been one of our favorite comics creators for a while, and we’re not the only ones—Twisted Romance, the Image Comics romance anthology featuring her art, was just nominated for an Eisner, comics’ most prestigious awards. (Her Instagram’s pretty great too.) We’re crazy excited to share her first comic for Riot Fest, which gives her psychedelic sci-fi style a techno-metaphysical twist.
RIOT FEST: Can you introduce yourself to our readers?
Alejandra Gutierrez: Sure! I’m Alejandra Gutierrez, I’m a cartoonist from Colombia, I’m 24, and I like eating limes.
Besides this strip, what are you working on right now?
I have a new comic I’ve just started to draw about sex and relationships and some other secret projects!
Which came first for Pray Phone: the idea or the pun?
Oh god, the idea. I saw a picture of a pay phone that said “talk to God here” and that gave me an idea for the concept—and then the pun just came to me. I was so smug about it.
If you had a Pray Phone right now, what would you ask for?
I would ask for the perfect custard mille-feuille pastry.
