Our Community Spotlights feature all the wonderful food, nightlife, and local businesses found in proximity to Douglass Park, home to Riot Fest. Join us throughout the year as the Riot Fest staff recommends their favorite spots in the neighborhood on a continuing basis—in hopes that you’ll make a stop in the neighborhood before, during, and well after the fest concludes.
Mestiza is a beautiful Latinx and women-owned boutique located in Pilsen. Mestiza was established in 2004. They first opened up a successful location but closed it to focus on an online platform and local art markets from 2009-2016. Upon reopening in 2017, it found its new home at 1523 W. 18th Street. Its presence provides locals with access to Latinx products and helps promote cultural and artistic appreciation. Having only visited twice, I wish I could buy the entire store. I purchased a small chocolate concha keychain, a Cafecito Con Chisme (Coffee with Gossip) sticker, and a “Chingona” desk plaque that translates to “Badass woman.”
On the second visit to Mestiza, I purchased a few tortilla coasters, a sirena (siren) coaster, and Frida Kahlo children’s coloring books. Its products also serve to create a connection between artists and shop-goers. Mestiza proudly promotes social consciousness by sourcing its products directly from makers or Fair Trade companies. Mestiza’s goal is to foster a supportive and creative environment for all its participants where they can showcase their unique crafts, let their voices be heard, and inspire people for success.
It’s the perfect place to purchase Latinx souvenirs. Check out their hours below.
